Seven

A n hour later, fresh from the spa bath, she and Tristan were in his car and on their way to his brother’s house. It wasn’t far into the trip before Tristan announced he needed to make a quick detour.

After parking, he ratcheted on the handbrake and turned to Ella.“I need to grab something.” He snatched a kiss from her cheek and smiled. “Won’t be long.”

She inwardly sighed at the tingling effect his kiss left behind. “I’m fine. Take your time.”

She didn’t mind the time alone. In fact, she’d take every minute she could to get her mind around what had happened last night…and this morning. Had she really spent such an unbelievable night with Tristan Barkley, her boss? Every time she closed her eyes, she relived the euphoria of their lovemaking. What would tonight bring?

Settling into her seat, Ella let her eyes drift shut.

Tristan hadn’t been gone a minute before her car door swung open. She sat up, expectant.

“Well, will you look who it is.”

Ella’s hand flying to her mouth didn’t muffle the sound of her gasp. Her pounding heart felt in danger of leaping from her chest. “What are you doing here?”

Drago Scarpini laid a forearm over the door window and leaned in. “Catching up with my long-lost sister.” His grin was a leer. “Long time no see, sis.”

The scent of his cheap aftershave worked on her senses like salts and Ella’s fright turned to sickened anger. “You followed us?”

He ran an eye over the luxurious interior of the Bugatti. “Wealth becomes you.”

Her chin lifted. “I suggest you leave. My boss will be back any minute.”

“Your boss. Yes. I’ve done some checking. You started work for Tristan Barkley when you disappeared off the face of the earth eight months ago. You’re his housekeeper.” He raised a thick black brow. “Although, from the look, you’re a little more than that. Housekeepers don’t passenger with their employer on Sunday mornings.” She didn’t notice the newspaper until he bent back a page and held it under his chin. “And they don’t wear evening gowns and rub elbows with mayors when they work.” His menacing eyes gleamed. “You’ve gone and landed yourself a whale, haven’t you, Eleanor?”

Her fingers dug into her lap but she kept her voice low and amazingly calm. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He pulled up straight. “I’m talking about you saving us both a lot of agony and agreeing to share some of your good fortune.” The twisted smile fell from his face. “My patience is running thin.”
